Venetian plaster is a trowel applied finish designed to go on in two very thin coats. It can be left as is in a flat finish or burnished to a high gloss. When it first goes on only subtle variations in the colors will be visible. As the surface is further smoothed, greater color variations will begin to present. The product color becomes a range of hues from light to dark depending on the color. Trowel technique is very important to the finish as well. Angular or more organic patterns can emerge from the method of application. Striking stencil effects are one of the most intriguing facets of venetian plaster. Apply the material through a stencil between first and second coats then, upon burnishing, the pattern will appear as a deeper color effect within the coating.
